Jamaal Perry (former QB of Weequahic H.S. 2006 Central Group II NJSIAA State Champions) was shot in the head…
Jamaal Perry, 21, a former 4-year starting QB for Weequahic High School Football Program was shot in the head Sunday, October 18th and was fighting for his life until dying in a Newark Hospital the next day. Leland Alexander, a beloved friend and family member of Perry was also shot, but has survived and is now recovering in University Hospital of Newark, NJ.
Perry was a strong, confident, and caring leader whom showed his strength and power by leading the 2006 Weequahic Indian football team to a Central Group II NJSIAA State Championship. Perry had talked about attending a community college until transferring to a Division I school, but family members and friends claimed he had started “hanging with the wrong crowd” and consequently his lifestyle changed uncontrollably. According to Star Ledger and family representatives, “Perry had grown up in his grandmother’s apartment in Felix Fuld Court, a Newark housing project known as “Lil’ Bricks” and beset by gang and drug problems. His mother did not live with him and his father had left the family a decade ago.”
Although Perry had made minor mistakes in his life, he will always be remembered as a powerful and poised leader who possessed a passion for success.
